Frequently Asked Questions About Yoga Therapy

What’s the difference between a general yoga class and private yoga therapy?

Practicing yoga in a group environment is a great way to benefit from the effects of yoga generally if you have no specific health issues, injuries or any other concerns you would like to address using yoga. Yoga therapy is offered on a 1:1 basis with an emphasis on tailoring the practice to the individual’s unique circumstances, abilities and goals. This leads to highly specific, accessible and targeted yoga practices that take into account where you are starting from, whilst moving you towards your health goals and aspirations.

What style of yoga do you teach?

I draw inspiration from a wide-range of different yoga styles and lineages including Hatha, Restorative, Well Woman and Yoga Nidra.

What does a typical yoga therapy session look like?

A yoga therapy session could contain a number of elements including posture work and movement exercises, breathwork, guided meditations, relaxation techniques, lifestyle assessment and self-enquiry. Yoga therapy is a collaborative and experiential process, so I will ask you for regular feedback during our time together.

How long are the sessions?

A yoga therapy session typically lasts for 60 minutes, with the first session lasting 75 minutes where we will discuss, In more depth, your motivation for starting yoga therapy, clarify any health goals you have and address any relevant medical history.

Where are the private yoga sessions held?

Sessions can be held via Zoom or in-person in a dedicated private space in Gosforth.

What equipment do I need?

You will need a yoga mat to get started. If sessions are face-to-face I can provide other props or advise on what will be useful. A blanket and a bolster or cushions depending on what is around you will be useful for relaxation and restorative practices.

How much are the sessions?

The first telephone consultation is free and lasts around 15 minutes. After that, fees depend on the location, duration and number of sessions booked. This is something we will discuss and outline in this first consultation.

What should I wear?

Dress in light, comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement. It’s helpful if your clothes are not too baggy so that I can observe your body’s movements more easily. Leggings, shorts or light elasticated tracksuit bottoms are great, as are form-fitting tops, tank tops or t-shirts.

Can I eat before a session?

It’s not recommended to eat or drink anything heavy before a session as this may make you feel uncomfortable or nauseous during the practice. However, a light snack beforehand is fine. Ideally allow 2-3 hours after a heavy meal before practice.

Do I need to practice at home?

Yoga therapy is tailored individually to you so if there are limitations to how much time you can commit we will work with that in the 1:1 sessions. It’s useful to bear in mind that not all home practice will be posture work on the mat, it can be breath work during the day or noticing/shifting thought patterns for example.

How many sessions will I need?

This differs from person to person. As part of the initial telephone consultation we will work together to formulate a loose plan to address your concerns and work towards your desired goals.

How do I book a session?
